Topography Meets Architecture: Exploring Fernando Higueras' “Rascainfiernos”

This interdisciplinary activity, jointly organized by the Schools of Architecture and Surveying, Geodesy and Cartography Engineering, consists of a guided visit to the Fundación Fernando Higueras, located in the architect’s former home and studio in Madrid. The aim is to explore the architectural and topographical significance of this unique underground building—nicknamed Rascainfiernos ("Hell-scraper")—which exemplifies how terrain can condition design decisions. Students of English for Professional and Academic Communication /English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in both fields will carry out the visit in English and reflect on the spatial, structural, and conceptual links between topography and architecture. This tour offers future architects and engineers the opportunity to devise solutions to existing problems, taking into account different environmental factors, topographical analysis and possible common stages that both fields/areas of knowledge consider. Furthermore, it fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among students, lecturers, and practitioners within this field. The architectural design of the building incorporates solutions that contribute to thermal comfort, the reduction of energy consumption, and the establishment a harmonious relationship with the environment. Due to its depth, temperature variations have a reduced effect on the interior. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Se ha previsto un número máximo de participantes para esta actividad, por ello se ofrecen dos días, se ajustará en función del número de inscritos. La visita tiene un coste que será abonado por los participantes el día de la visita. La salida para la actividad se realizará desde la Escuela de Topografía para los estudiantes de ETSITGC y desde la Escuela de Arquitectura para los estudiantes de ETSAM, junto a las profesoras Dra. Ester Giménez Beltrán y Dra. Ana Martín Castillejos. Es muy probable que, llegada la fecha, se contemple la posibilidad de quedar en la misma Fundación Fernando Higueras.
